I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a moment when I looked up the trail, staring down the countless switchbacks, sneaking their way in and out of the mountainside. The elevation gain was steep, and I couldn’t help but to consider, “Do I really enjoy this?” I know I’ll make it to the top, but the all too familiar whisper of self-doubt creeps in each time my feet, legs, and back start to protest. After already cranking out a handful of rocky miles of uphill— the heat bears down more than anticipated. The actual distance up to the desert pass remains a total mystery, but I carry on, one step at a time, knowing ultimately there is no other place I’d rather be.
